고통에 대해서 그들은 결코 틀리지 않았어

고대 거장들은. 그들은 얼마나 잘 알고 있었던가

고통의 인간적 위치를. 고통이 어떻게 발생하는지

누군가 밥을 먹거나 창문을 열거나 그냥 멍하니 걷는 동안

나이든 사람들이 경건하고 열정적으로 

기적적인 탄생을 기다릴 때, 그것이 특별히 일어나길 원치 않는

아이들은 숲 가장자리 연못에서 스케이트를 타고 있었지

그들은 결코 잊지 않았어

끔찍한 순교조차 결국 지나갈 것임을

어쨌든 구석진 곳, 더러운 곳에서

개들은 개같은 삶을 이어가고, 고문하는 사람의 말은

그 순진한 엉덩이를 나무에 비벼대고 있었지

브뤼헬의 이카로스를 예로 들어볼까. 어떻게 모든 것이

그 재난에서 아주 느긋하게 고개를 돌렸는지, 쟁기질하는 사람은

텀벙 물소리를 들었을지 모르지, 버림받은 외침을,

하지만 그에겐 그건 중요한 실패가 아니었어, 태양은 환하게 비췄지 

하얀 다리가 초록 물속으로 사라질 때, 비싸고 섬세한 배는

뭔가 놀라운 것을 보았음에 틀림없어, 하늘에서 떨어지는 소년을,

그래도 어딘가 가야 했고 그래서 조용히 항해를 했지.

About suffering they were never wrong, 

The old Masters: how well they understood

Its human position: how it takes place

While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;

How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting

For the miraculous birth, there always must be

Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating

On a pond at the edge of the wood:

They never forgot

That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course

Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot

Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse

Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.

In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away

Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may

Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,

But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone

As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green

Water, and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen

Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,

Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.
